Our Grandma's House
Yyterin Mummula is truly our grandma’s house. Here in Yyteri, we have spent a lot of time during our childhood, swimming in the summer and skiing or sledding on the dunes in the winter.
Our grandma’s house was completed in 1953. It was built by our grandparents Onni and Aune. The house is a war veteran’s house, and its sheltered yard still has old perennials that our grandma Aune carefully nurtured.
Originally, the outbuilding of the grandma’s house housed a barn for cows, an outhouse, and a sauna with a sauna chamber. Even in the 1970s, our grandma Aune took care of milk-producing cows in the barn. Grandpa Onni worked at the Mäntyluoto port, which was both an important employer and an import-export port.
We grandchildren have spent a lot of time here in Yyteri since the 1970s. In the summer, we swam on the sands (= Yyteri beach) and at the nearby Fatijärvi lake, and in the winter, we skied and sledded on the dunes. At that time, there was a store in the Kaanaa village called Onni’s Choice. Our grandpa Onni always spoiled us children by bringing us a bag of Fazer licorice from there. Of course, we imagined that the store was named after our grandfather.
